The development and economic buoyancy of any nation is a function of research and its application. Both the academia and the industries anchor and thrive on research. For these two worlds to effectively collide for a very safe landing, there is need to foster a strong relationship between both worlds such that the advancement of the two worlds catapults our nation into a new era of better growth and advancement. The CUSCAF 2021 has thus been coined ‘ The Academia and Industries: Bridging the Gap’

I wish to sincerely welcome you to the Crawford University Science Conference and Fairs “CUSCAF 2021” with an encompassing conference theme “Academia and Industry: Bridging the Gap.” The Academia provide the essential and high-level skills necessary for every labour market worldwide, which includes engineers, doctors, entrepreneurs, lawyers, scientist, civil and public servants among others. In addition, the Academia over the years has facilitated the transfer of research results in health, telecommunications, security, energy, transportation, governance, judiciary, etc., but the transfer of knowledge-skills requires sufficient and sustained investment.

Currently, the Nigerian Academia are faced with the upheld task of investment to enable them access to sustainable resources; Infrastructures, laboratories equipment’s, training & professional development, Research & Development (R&D) of prototypes, etc. The Industry, which is profit driven can offer a natural route to maximize the use of innovative ideas of the Academia via Transfer of Technology (ToT) and to also provides or augments the required investment support of the Academia.

In developing countries, the approach from the Academia and the Industry has different perspectives and expectations, which create the gap between the two and these include the Academia: (a). Strives for maximum solution to maximize their recognition, whereas industry seeks the minimum solution to minimize their ...risk. (b). Is interested in creating new solutions having high innovation rate, whereas industry prefers proven solutions having low risk. (c). Has a long range perspective, whereas industry thinks in terms of short range goals. (d). Is striving for peer’s recognition, whereas the industry is striving to survive.
From the above, it’s obvious that Academia and Industry are two different worlds which operate on different pedestals. Having different mindsets, academics and industrialists are living in different worlds and pursuing different goals. The Academic is striving for creating new solutions with a high innovation rate, scientific achievements and recognition from peers with a long range perception. The Industrialist thinks in terms of short range goals, prefers proven solutions with a low risk and is mainly concerned with costs, profits and economic survival. You will agre with me that both have different purposes and different ideologies.
This conference is aimed at proffering solutions for bridging the gap, for the solutions to be sustainable they need to be grounded in the reality of both academe and industry. The solutions must have a “win” for all participants. For students, this means job opportunities, and career and life success. For professors, this means access to funding and publication stature, and quality teaching. For industry, this means faster-starting entry-level employees, workforce development and problem-solving help from academe. For government, this means greater national productivity and development.
