Dr. Lawal holds a doctoral degree in Food and Industrial Microbiology, University of Ibadan 2005, a Master of science degree in Microbiology University of Lagos, Nigeria 1987 and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology, University of Lagos, Nigeria 1985. He started his career as Research Officer I, with FIIRO in 1988 in the Department of Biotechnology and rose through the ranks by promotion. He was appointed Director of Biotechnology in January 2018. His contribution in the Department of Biotechnology include production of bio-gas and bio-fertilizer from cow waste, production of 42m3 biogas digester, development of technology for industrial enzymes such as amylase, glucoamylase, pectinases, glucose isomerase, xylanase, cellulase and protease amongst a few. Dr. Lawal’s innumerable contributions in enzyme research led to his appointment as the Head of Enzyme Division in the year 2013 and the Federal Government of Nigeria Pronounced FIIRO as the National Center for Enzyme Research in Nigeria in May 2013.
Dr. Lawal has the following patents to his credit: Production of indigenous extracellular microbial amylases and their applications; generation of biogas from piggery waste using 42m3 biogas digester. He is also presently the Editor of Journal of Industrial Research and Technology (JIRT).

Dr. Lawal is currently the President of Association of Industrial Microbiologist of Nigeria (AIMN) and is a member to the following professional bodies;
